Rembering to make the Holidays make “sense.”

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Regardless of what holiday traditions you believe in, this time of year can be overwhelming.

Often holidays come with high expectations, busy schedules and empty wallets. We believe that a great way to re-connect with this magical time of year is to get back to basics and focus on the 5-senses.  Here are some suggestions for re-connecting with the big five.

Smell:  Smell is strongly connected to memory. One great way to remember a happy time is to seek out a favorite smell. No one does smell better than Yankee Candle. So take a deep breath and go find that special fragrance that will bring you back.

Touch: If the only thing you seem to be touching lately is a screen, maybe this is the sense for you. The sense of touch  is how our bodies alerts us to problems but also to pleasure. Take a moment, close your eyes and really feel a cozy blanket, a hot drink in your hands or how it feels to unwrap your favorite holiday treat (we recommend Hersey Kisses- if you’d like to know).

Sight: Some holiday sights can be hard to love. For example, a line around the corner at your favorite coffee house, the daytime graveyard of 50 unplugged inflatable items in your neighbor’s yard, or the price on that “I have to have it” gift. Here is something beautiful to look at if you are having a hard time seeing the “light”.

Taste: For many, indulging in favorite holiday treats is the highlight of the season. Nothing like sinking into your Grandmother, Nana, Babci, Gaga, Grammie, Grams, Ruth or your name for that special person’s famous cookies. Here are some other ideas you can make. Who knows, it might one day make you famous!

Hearing: Choose your sound, snow crunching under your feet, holiday tunes, the timer going off alerting you that the cookies are ready etc, and find it! And if creating snow to crunch in isn’t going to happen, please enjoy the following song that we believe should be a part of everyone’s holiday season (click the picture).

So that’s it! Hope you have enjoyed making “sense” of this crazy time of year with us and Happy Holidays!

Tips for How to Follow Through on Your 2012 New Year Resolutions.

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Just in case the holiday fueled enthusiasm for your resolution is starting to fade, here are some tips on how to change behavior and help you reach whatever goal you may have for 2012.

What? You never made one, well let’s start there.

Here is a list of common resolutions to help your positive change juices flowing. We are particularly a fan of the last one on the list.

Now that you have a goal, here is a great list of how to reach it.

Creating change can seem overwhelming. We believe that it is never too late to try new things or develop healthy habits. This is why healthy eating, making new friends and trying new things is an undercurrent at our camps for our adult campers.

Good luck with your resolutions. We’d love to hear your goals and support you along the way!

Companies Who Create Opportunities for People With Developmental Disabilities.

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

One size doesn’t always fit all….so what can we do about it?  For some, the answer is to take the reins and create a whole new “fit” for those with developmental disabilities.

Shopping is often something fun, relaxing and exciting for many people. However, for individuals with Downs Syndrome finding clothes that fit well can be a challenge.  As described in this CNN article, It is common for someone with Downs to have “thicker limbs, a short, thick neck, and short stature. Their knees and elbows are at slightly different points on their legs and arms. An underactive thyroid is common, and that can cause weight gain. Additionally, many children and adults with Down syndrome are sensitive to tight or restrictive clothing, especially around the waist or neckline.

Therefore, finding that “perfect” pair of jeans or top can be nearly impossible, until now, thanks to Karen Bowersox and her company Downs Design.  Karen is on a mission to create an entire line of clothing for this special population ranging from jeans to prom dresses.

Another company we wanted to celebrate is Inclusion Films.  This company, created by John Travolta’s brother Joey, trains adults with developmental disabilities in the nuts and bolts of film making — from writing the script to building sets and using film and editing equipment – with the goal of finding them jobs in the entertainment industry or some other field, as described in this LA Times article.

Joey has used his experience in the film business and his Hollywood connections to create an appropriate training program for adults with developmental disabilities.  We love that this company sees no reason why everyone can’t have a part in creating movie magic.

Check out the PSA created by Inclusion participants.

So next time you “shop till you drop” or watch a great movie, feel good that these experiences are also made accessible for people with developmental disabilities thanks to individuals who took action and made the world a better place.

Also can’t hurt to ask yourself, “how can I create positive change for someone who may have special needs?”

The 12 Days of Crafting (Homemade Crafts That Anyone Can Do).

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

CBS wants to encourage the Blue Skies family to embrace their “crafty” side during this winter season.  Now, for all those readers who would fake being sick rather than go to arts and crafts at camp, don’t worry.  Just like at camp, all we ask is that you try. Also, you automatically get LOTS of style points for making something homemade and who doesn’t want that?

 12 Days of Crafting Ideas
(feel free to create a sing-a-long version if you’d like)

12) Fabric Garland for beginners- This is a website of Liz, our Program Director’s, friend!

11) Easy Peasy Snowman Ornament- Loved the name AND the project.

10) Paper snowflakes – Show up even the most talented kid with these easy to follow instructions. Complete with great pictures and a video.

9) Mustache drinking glass - Sounds weird but promise you it will be a hit!)

8) Pasta angles – If they are good enough for a 1st grader they are good enough for us, right?

7) Lou’s Homemade Fudge - You won’t believe how easy this holiday favorite can be!

6) Drying Mittens Holiday Card – These cute cards will remind you of coming in after a long day of playing in the snow. Or daydreaming of playing in snow if you live in the south….

5) Mulled Wine – If this doesn’t get you into the holiday spirit then we don’t know what will…and it’s SO easy!

4) 25 best Gingerbread Men Cookie recipes – Couldn’t choose just one. Also, don’t be afraid to buy some at the store but decorate at home….a little sneaky…or “crafty,” if you will, but no one will know or care!

3) Peanut Butter Bird Feeders – Yum yum! Just make sure they –or you- aren’t allergic first.

2) Winter table decoration ideas – Why not jazz up your table during your next get together? Or even better, do it for no particular reason. Life is too short to not add some sparkle once in a while, right?

1) Esty Website – When all else fails, go to this site and buy something someone else made by hand! It’s like an “amazon.com” for local artists.

So grab your positive attitude and materials and get started!  Hope you have a great time and we’d love to hear about your beautiful creations (or funny mishaps).

Tis the Season!

Exciting New (Four Legged) Additions to Our North Carolina Host Camp’s Staff.

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Just when you thought camp couldn’t get better, it does thanks to some four legged additions.

Camp Harrison, our North Carolina host camp, has added some interesting additions to their staff this year. For what this personnel lacks in personal hygiene, they more than make up for it with love and character.

You can find them at their office, the beautiful barn and stable that is the heart of the brand new Camp Harrison Dude Ranch.

School Bus, ATV, Truffles, Genesis, Moses, Peppermint Patty, Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Rebel, Nutmeg, Chocolate Chip Milkshake (Chip for short), Linus, Shrek, Rusty, Sweet Potato, Jones, Nancy and Momma Eleanor are just some of the animals who will welcome you on your drive into camp. They may also be described as 24 horses, 4 goats, 10ish chickens, 4 donkeys, 1 alpaca and 2 kittens.

Thanks to Denise Hammond and her family, campers and volunteers will be able to enjoy the company of these four legged friends while experiencing a taste of working on a farm.

Even if you have never wanted to put on some chaps and live in the Wild West, the Camp Harrison Dude Ranch experience promises something enjoyable for everyone. Their “human” staff  understands that participants come with differing comfort levels and promise to provide a variety of ways to take part of the fun.

Regardless of what role you play while at the ranch, it has been proven that there are many emotional, physical and psychological benefits to being around animals.  We see this program as one more opportunity for campers to widen their comfort zones and learn something new.

Can’t wait to hear all the stories from our happy campers as they mosey in from a great time on the ranch!
