Smoothies: Friend or Foe?
Smoothies can be good for your body, mind, and taste buds. But why have you gained 10 pounds after adopting a daily habit at your local smoothie shop? It all comes down to being an educated consumer -- knowing that even smoothies can have some pitfalls. In a society where salads are sometimes the least healthy menu choice, the Camp Blue Skies staff would like to shed some light on how to make wise menu choices, provide a friendly reminder to always question the fast-food definition of “healthy”, and give some quick tips on how to take this smoothie situation into your own hands.
Knowledge is power even when it comes to choosing a supposed–to-be- good–for-you afternoon treat. This video explains why some smoothies aren’t always good for you, and how to make healthier choices:
Now, let’s be clear: the Camp Blue Skies team is a huge fan of sugar and by no means wants to serve as a dark health cloud in your Blue Skies world. However, in our collective opinion, it all comes down to:
- Having a "healthy snack" versus having a "treat".
In other words, any healthy food should be consumed in moderation; bananas are a great healthy snack, but that does not mean you should eat them by the truckload. Likewise, just because the food label says "healthy" does not make it so. Read the ingredients first. If "high fructose corn syrup" or any complicated words you can't pronounce are in the first few ingredients, then look elsewhere.
Really, the best option is to take matters into your own hands (or blender) and make a lip smacking, good for your body blend right at home. This ensures that you know exactly what is going into your smoothie. And any Camp Blue Skies participant will tell you, it can also be tons of fun. Magic happens when you blend up knowledge, healthy ingredients, and creativity (big fun chef hats don't hurt either). Here is a helpful video with some great tips of how to make healthy smoothies an easy part of your everyday life:
Likewise, there are a plethora of wonderful smoothie resources available online. Here are some other fun recipes to work into your smoothie repertoire:
As you can see, the options are endless and anything can be as complicated or as simple as you make it.
I hope we have shed some light on how to make smoothies a friend. Please send us your favorite recipes, add your comments to this post, and have fun exploring the wacky world of smoothies!
