Annual fishing derby is a hit – hook, line and sinker

Anglers, guides and volunteers spent a fun day on Lake Broyhill near Wilkesboro and raised money for Camp Blue Skies during the annual Hooked on Camp Fishing Derby Sept. 26-27. Lake Broyhill is a private lake on the grounds of YMCA Camp Harrison in Boomer, NC, which is home to Camp Blue Skies’ North Carolina sessions.

Here’s a look at the fishing highlights of the day (and be sure to watch the video):

  • Total fish caught: 365 (the record is 378)

  • Most fish caught by a single team: Tim Miller and Andrew Laing, 69 total

  • Largest Large Mouth Bass: Mark Holman , 3 lbs., 3.75 oz.

  • Largest Blue Gill: Tim Miller, 1 lb, 2.75 oz.

The derby raised over $20,000 to provide financial assistance for campers to bridge the gap between camper fee and the actual cost of camp.
